Creativity Crisis
Creation & creativity is God’s gift to us as His children. When we enjoy creativity and embrace creation that God has given us – we are effectively living from our souls / hearts back to God. To put that into perspective, in a Christian environment, the best thing any of us can give in whatever mission field we’ve been placed, is a great us… Spirit Led, balanced, joyful, with hobbies & interests. A good representation of the Kingdom of heaven reflects our Father God’s love; being a complete person makes for good ambassadorship! The world likes to see wholesome full people. Doesn’t it – Bear Grylls – James Coben – Denzel Washington – Tom Hanks – Carrie Underwood… to name a few!
I believe when we ignore our own needs long enough, then we are potentially on the road to self-destruction, especially in the realm of creativity or doing things that we love to do which energizes and refresh’s our souls.
I work with a lot of people be that mentorship or in a coaching capacity, the majority by far, really struggle with this area. When asked what do you love to do? What’s your happy space? Where do you loose track of time? Many have no idea!
If we do not look after ourselves and neglect our souls one day our essential core self will have a rebellion when you least expect it. We have all heard too many stories of people being caught in hotel rooms in compromising situations. More often than not, I believe it is because they have neglected their souls and not had hobbies/interests outside of work, life or even faith filled roles, that feeds their soul.
When considering these big areas for yourself… Working. Serving family / community, Creativity, Personal Interests; it is first best to think about the type of person you are and what your belief systems in this area look like.
I want to encourage you to think about a few things… Just close your eyes for a minute & write down your gut response to these questions… Are you a scheduler or more spontaneous? What are your largest time commitments? How much time do you have for things that you enjoy where you can get lost in time?
How closely aligned you are to the creative element of your identity as God’s child.?
What do you think of when you think of creativity? Where is your creativity expressed? When I think of creativity I firstly think of the amazingness of God and his creative flair… Have you ever seen Louie Giglio’s “Indescribable” video if you click here you can go straight to it… It is so worth a watch so you get a feel for the one that created you and I in His image, which includes the creative side of us!
If we don’t pay attention to where we are at in this area and what is available to us enabling us to fulfill our creative needs and wants we can fall into a pit of despair / self-pity. OR we can get so busy and full of our own importance with whatever position we may hold we can forget/loose who we are & what we once enjoyed doing or discovering something new to enjoy.
What is your happy space? Where do you loose track of time? What do you love to do?
Make some time to explore these notions, then also consider if you like to do them with others, who that may be. If your hobby is more of a solitary pursuit then make a note of that too. If you are stuck then take some time and get acquainted with your creative side… it is just as important as putting food on the table in my opinion!
